How often should you sight in a hunting rifle?

The sighting is one of the most important parts of preparing for the hunting season. The first step in sighting your rifle is thoroughly cleaning, hunting · fishing · making a living. Before hunting, you should see your rifle and practice shooting so you can be confident in your skill and the accuracy of your rifle. The goal is to “zero your rifle so that it shoots exactly at a target point at a certain distance.

You may want to zero your rifle so that it hits 100 yards in the middle of a target if you know your shots are at that distance when hunting. Every time a scope is mounted on a rifle, it should be sighted and zero should be confirmed. For a new scope, start with the slot sighting. In my experience, a local gun shop should be able to do this at little to no cost.

You can see with their eyeballs, but I’m either doing it wrong or my eyes just aren’t what they used to be. That’s why I prefer to let my local gun shop do the drill hole sighting because I don’t have the tools to do it. I was thinking about picking up a laser drilling sighting tool like the SiteLite Laser Boresighter, but I didn’t really have a need for it because my scopes rarely move after initial assembly. When you see in a rifle, you should always shoot in groups of three shots.

No rifle shoots the same hole over and over again. You use the average or center of these three holes to adjust your scope. Fire those three shots perfectly on the porthole with your scope at maximum magnification, and then head down to see where they landed. Kalkomey is an official state-delegated provider that offers hunting training courses and certifications, and publishes hunting safety training materials.

I’ve had some hunting enthusiasts buy different hunting ammo than the one used to see in their rifle because the typical ammo was out of stock or another brand had a killer sale. If you’re not hunting at home, be sure to check zero one last time you arrive at your hunting ground. For short-range hunting situations — such as hunting for tight cover or for dangerous game — you might want a 100-yard zero.
